type='text'>Apple Cider Vinegar

If you are into organics and home made remedies you probably already know about apple cider vinegar. Aside from being handy around the house and in cooking, it has several healing uses for which it is quite effective.

What is Apple Cider Vinegar?

Apple cider vinegar is made during the process of apple fermentation. During the fermentation process of any cider, bacteria and yeast are added to assist the sugar to turn to alcohol. The alcoholic liquid then has another bacteria added to turn it to vinegar.

Health Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is useful for the topical treatment of skin ailments such as pimples, along with scalp complaints such as dandruff.

There are also claims it can help medical conditions such as chronic fatigue syndrome, diabetes, high cholesterol and arthritis. Some also claim that it aids weight loss and help guards against obesity.

There is yet to be any solid scientific research to back these claims. Although there have been a few studies conducted into the benefits of apple cider vinegar, many more are needed for validity.

Risks of Using Apple Cider Vinegar

Many people take apple cider vinegar internally, diluting it in water or juice. If taken in small amounts occasionally there appears to be minimal risk. However higher doses over an extended period of time may be harmful.

As apple cider vinegar is made from acetic acid, ingesting it undiluted may be harmful to tooth enamel and the tissue of the throat.

Long-term use may also cause low levels of potassium in the body.

As vinegar contains chromium, it may interact with a persons insulin levels. If you have diabetes discuss with your doctor before taking apple cider vinegar.

Do you use apple cider vinegar? If so, what do you use it for?

<img width='1' favourite cookies AND they're super easy to make! Obviously, use organic ingredients where you can.

Preheat oven to moderate.

1 cup wholemeal flour (or whatever kind you have)
1 tbspn ground cinnamon
1 tbspn ground ginger
1 tspn bi-carb soda

2 tbspns (about 60g) butter or margarine or other alternative (use what you have)
2 tbspns honey or golden syrup
1/4 cup brown sugar or raw sugar

Combine dry ingredients in a bowl.

In a saucepan over medium heat melt together the butter, honey and sugar. Make sure you stir the ingredients so they combine and don't burn. Remove from heat immediately and stir in dry ingredients until combined.

Spoon onto tray lined with baking paper and press each one down with a fork. Bake for 8 - 10 minutes. Then cool on a wire rack.

You can make these as big or as small as you want.

NOTE: The consistency of the dough will depend on the types of ingredients that you use, it should be thick and kind of 'spongy'. If, after you mix the dry ingredients with the liquid it seems too dry add in some water or melt some more butter/margarine. If it seems too wet, add in a little extra flour.
<img width='1' height='1' Plus she's hella funny.

This could serve 1 as a meal or 2/3 as an accompaniment.

Ingredients

3 medium sized potatoes - washed

3 tablespoons parsley pesto

3 slices fresh Parmesan

3 tablespoons pasta sauce (or fresh tomatoes or whatever kind of sauce you like!)

Method

Preheat oven to 200c. Line a baking tray with baking paper.

Cut into each potato length-ways and width-ways without cutting all the way through. You should be able to push the four corners apart, but the four corners should still be joined at the bottom.

Place half a tablespoon of the pesto on each side of the potato splits and place a slice of Parmesan in the middle of the four corners. Then push the four corners of the potato together. The pesto should hold the potato together. Repeat with remaining potatoes.

Next spoon a tablespoon of your chosen sauce over each potato. Make sure it goes down into the cracks and covers the top.

Bake in the over for 45 minutes or until cooked through.

Season with salt and pepper.

Enjoy!

Chicken breast with pistachio and marmalade stuffing

2 large chicken breasts (I used 3 medium ones)
2 rashers of bacon - diced finely
1 medium red onion - diced
1 tblspn pistachio's - chopped
1 tblspn thyme
1/4 cup orange marmalade
1/4 cup bread crumbs
olive oil
toothpicks (for securing chicken closed)

Pre-heat oven to 180c and line a baking tray with baking paper (don't place in oven yet).

In a frypan heat 2 tspns olive oil. Just wet a face washer with hot water and wring out the excess. Place on the affected area for as long as the compress is warm. This gently coaxes the pimple out, and also helps to reduce the redness and swelling.

Apple Cider Vinegar - I have probably had the most success with this. Just wet a cotton wool ball or cotton makeup removal pad with some apple cider vinegar and hold it on the spot of frustration for a minute or so. Don't hold it there too long as it is quite acidic and could burn your skin. Do this a few times a day. For me it helped the head of the pimple come out quite quickly.

Tea Tree Oil - I actually found this quite useful for when I had brought the pimple to the surface. It helps to dry the pimple out, whilst providing some anti-bacterial protection. Wet a cotton wool ball or cotton makeup removal pad with cool water and add a drop of tea tree oil and dab on the affected area.

Honey and Cinnamon - this is a little bit messy at first, but it does provide some good results. Mix together a teaspoon of honey with a teaspoon of cinnamon. Apply to the required areas and leave on for as long as possible. It's sticky and uncomfortable at first, but it does dry eventually. This method brought out pimples that I didn't even know were there! It's not as fast working as other methods, but just as effective.

Remember, NEVER squeeze a pimple. It could cause it to get infected and leave a scar on your pretty face!

Do you have any other natural methods of bringing out blind pimples?

Passionfruit and Mandarin Cordial

2 cups water
1 cup sugar (or an equivalent amount of an organic sugar alternative, such as agave)
1 cup passionfruit pulp
1 medium madarin
Juice of 1 lime (or lemon)

Combine water, sugar and lime juice in saucepan and bring to the boil. Cream can be added just before serving if you like.

Creamy Pesto Penne

2 tbs butter
200g mushrooms
200g semi-dried tomatoes
2 cloves garlic - minced
500g penne pasta
2 tbs flour
2 tbs butter
3/4 cup vegetable stock
3/4 cup milk
2 tbs pesto

1. Make a well and pour in lukewarm water. Mix well until it forms a sticky dough. Knead for 10 minutes on floured surface, adding extra flour as needed. Dough will still be slightly sticky, mould into a ball.

Coat the inside of a large bow with melted butter, place dough ball inside and turn to coat with butter. Cover and place in a room temp area with no breeze. The dough will double in size - the time this takes will vary, so just keep an eye on it.

Once doubled, uncover and punch down into the dough. This will release the gases that have pent up from the yeast. Remove from bowl and knead for another few minutes. The dough should have a stretchy, rubbery consistency.

Place into loaf tin and push out to shape. Cover again and let rise for a further 30 mins, or until it has risen slightly over the top of the baking tin.

Bake on medium for around 30-40 minutes. Bread is done when there is a hollow sound when you tap it.

This is a really basic recipe. I have just read on the Bhip (http://www.borderlinehippy.com/forums) forum that Natural Instinct, although saying their products are Sodium Lauryl Sulphate free, still contain other sulphates. Yes they may use essential oils, organic ingredients and be free of a lot of other nasties, but what's the point if the products still contain other sulphates?

Natural Instinct products contain Sodium Salt of Sulphonated Laureth 2, or SLES 2EO. This is what makes the product foam, however it is also harmful to the skin and can cause irritation after extended exposure. There is also talk of it being a carcinogen, which is an agent related to causing cancer. Check out the Wikipedia reference for more info http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_laureth_sulfate

It just goes to show that when buying, we need to read the ingredients listing on the product (although sometimes even then companies don't list all ingredients). Don't just take the front label as gospel! Remember that most companies out there are only interested in selling, and they'll put anything on their packaging to do so!

Additives

Apart from trying to buy organic, I am also very aware of what additives are in the food I eat.

This is an interesting website with loads of info on what food additives are, and what implications they can have on one's health.

http://www.fedupwithfoodadditives.info/

Here is the link to a list of nasty additives you can print out, fold in half (so it becomes a business card size) and store in your purse/wallet for when you are food shopping:

http://www.fedupwithfoodadditives.info/information/nastyadditivecard.pdf

Hello Basil!

I planted some Basil seeds a week ago and they decided to make an appearance this week. Inside the fruit there is pale flesh, with purple pulp and seeds that are easily digested.

Tamarillo Jam

Tamarillo's
Sugar
Lemon juice

Cover tamarillo's in a bowl with boiling water. Leave for a minute or two, then drain, then cover with cold water and leave for a nother minute. Remove from water and cut ends off, you will then be able to remove the skin easily. Dice up the fruit (no need to remove the seeds, as they are edible) and place in a saucepan. For every cup of fruit add 3/4 cup of sugar, I used brown sugar, but I suppose you could use any type. Add a squit of fresh lemon juice. Cook on low heat, stirring occassionally until it sets (about 50 mins).

The end result:

Next time I'm thinking about adding in some apple and cinnamon. It's a carrier oil that can be used as a base for other concoctions. Mix a few drops of your favourite essential oil with 4 teaspoons of sweet almond oil and you have a really simple treatment for your hands. If your skin is super dry, mix in a teaspoon of vegetable glycerine. Store in a dark glass bottle (I store mine in a Rescue Remedy bottle) and shake well before each use. A few drops goes a long way with this one!

Rosewater and Glycerine Hand Lotion
All skin types

20ml rosewater<br This mask will help to smooth and tighten your skin. Leaves my skin looking super polished and even younger (if that's possible).

If you have dry skin, smear that face with honey or oil (such as sweet almond) before applying the egg white.

For oily skin, whisk in 1/2 teaspoon organic lemon juice with the egg white.

Honey Mask

This is even easier than the egg mask and is suitable for all skin types.
